Immortal Duncan MacLeod, born in Scotland in 1592, has faced battles with others of his kind for over four hundred years. An immortal can be killed only if he is decapitated. In ages past, carrying a sword was common and there was no such thing as fingerprinting. Today, despite new challenges, these ancient warriors must still continue their quest to defeat all others. For in the end, there can be only one!
Highlander: The Series is six seasons of the life of Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul), kinsman of the original film Highlander, Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert). In Season 1, we meet Duncan, his Mortal beloved, Tessa Noel (Alexandra Vandernoot), their protégé, Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch) at their antique shop and Tessa's sculpture studio. Duncan has been avoiding the Game, but he isdrawn back into the fighting as other Immortals seek him and his loved ones. MacLeod, reared to be chief of his clan, has a strong sense of honor and justice that he has carried for 400 years. The series introduces us to his old friends and enemies, his ethical dilemmas, and his constant watchfulness as he tries to keep his head and protect his loved ones, while avoiding Mortal notice.
Over time, MacLeod battles other Immortals, mortal criminals and rogue Watchers; he loves and grieves for the loss of his Mortals and ultimately learns that it may be possible for a reluctant killer to have a community of close friends, both Mortal and Immortal, among whom he can find peace. The stories are from MacLeod's present and past, twisted into a braid that shows us who he is and why he chooses the actions he does. The stories are an exciting interplay of drama, humor and action.
The series features lushly filmed flashbacks, mainly of MacLeod’s life, that show how past events shape his sense of honor and his moral core. Over the six seasons, we see MacLeod at the Battle of Culloden in Scotland, in Mexico to help oust Maximillian, at the court of Queen Anne of England, amidst the Kali uprisings in British India, and shipwrecked in 17th century Japan where he obtains his signature ivory-handled katana at the cost of a good friend and teacher.
